Bats are more common than most people likely think. The thing is that they’re visually fleeting for us as they flap their wings ferociously and hunt close to trees. Moreover, you can’t hear most of them.
I wrote about getting a bat detector earlier this summer as a result of a bat walk, and it has provided me with hours of entertainment. The detector has also been a great tool of serving friends and strangers with nature appreciation – yielding mixed reactions of course.
Some people couldn’t care less, others have been slightly terrified and then there were the wildly invested.
I wondered for a while how seasoned bat fans took clear pictures of these animals, and various nature blogs gave the answers I needed. Especially this one featuring a passionate bat enthusiast who even writes about handling them.

My assumption was that an abrupt camera flash would have a negative effect on bats as they fly. Turns out there’s no substantiated evidence nor expert experience of flash photography having an averse effect on bats. If the bats are largely okay with a human presence, then they’ll be okay with said humans using a camera flash. Thus I decided to test this verdict out on some of Cork’s bats.
