Revisiting the compass jellyfish

Video - Irish wildlife
2025 | Cork, Ireland

A few years ago I worked on a video for Discover Iveragh and had the pleasure of learning about various wildlife in Irish coastal waters. One of these was the compass jellyfish (Chrysaora hysoscella) which is an incredible looking animal. Spotted two of them after a dive around Owenahincha, and it was a nice thing to revisit after having studied the critters in order to animate them. I was moreover happy to have noticed them early as physical contact can inflict a good dose of pain on human skin.

Below is some of the animation work I did for Discover Iveragh in collaboration with Aperture Media. It shows the life cycle of a compass jellyfish.

Also:

I really, really hate that I have to state this, but there’s so much Generative AI-slop out there (yes, even content that pretends to be scientific). Know that I do not use AI for any of my writings, visuals nor thoughts. It’s all written and visualised by a human, meaning me, unless stated otherwise. Therefore, you can always reach out to me if there’s anything factually or grammatically incorrect.

Now, thank you for your interest in this page – I hope you enjoy it!
