A Danish island from above

Scandinavia

Nyord bird sanctuary on Møn
The flat, marshy island of Nyord hosts a modest village and a bird sanctuary.
A few years ago, I was given an adventurous aerial tour of the Danish island of Møn. My father moved there in the late 90s and as such, much of my childhood was spent exploring the local forests, towns, hills and coasts. Eventually, I was moved there full-time (long story, but parents… am I right?!) four kilometres from one of the most beautiful places in Denmark: Møns Klint.

When people say that they’ve a deep adherence to or longing for certain places, Klinteskoven (The Cliff Forest) and Møns Klint (Cliff of Møn) are places like that for me.

Most of Møns Klint in one picture.
I used to know every nook and cranny of the forest, where the orchards grew, the tick hotspots, where the vipers most likely were and the best hilltops for the sunset.

Yet, despite days of scouring the rocks and sediments of the Cretaceous limestone of Møns Klint, I never found a mosasaur tooth. Plenty of belemnites (vættelys in Danish) and sea urchin fossils, though.

Back to the aerial tour! Suddenly seeing all of this terrain encapsulated from half a kilometre above was mesmerising, nostalgic and surreal. I hope you don’t need to have a relation with the place to enjoy these pictures.
Møns Klint-landslide near Jydelejet
As Møns Klint sports the highest cliffs of Denmark (not counting the overseas territories), the landslides can be pretty dramatic.
Ulvshale on Møn
Stretching north from the centre of the island, the peninsula Ulvshale connects Møn with the smaller island of Nyord. This landform also has a forest that has been untouched for nearly a hundred years[1] and the largest number of snakes I’ve ever seen!
Stege by at Møn from above
Stege By – the largest town on the island.
Klintholm Havn on Møn from above
The fishing hamlet, tourist trap and final bus stop Klintholm Havn. I still remember my childhood friend and I getting chased by someone whose feathers he’d ruffled.
